Don't put DVD drives or any other AV appliance that generates heat on top of it or below it. Don't put it in anything like a cabinet that will trap heat behind it. As Steo says, best to have it free standing, preferably next to the TV, IMO. It did take a little over two years for mine to die, and I didn't follow any of the above advice.

There are third party coolers available(15-20 dollars) but I don't know how well they work.
I've heard reports that some of the third party cooling solutions can make things worse, because they change how the air flows around the inside by drawing it out the back so fast. But I don't know how true that is.
Had to do my 360 (

Do you remember when reliability and technology faults were big arguments in the console versus PC wars?
No, but I do remember the original NES being the most unreliable piece of electronics I've ever owned. I think it's awesome that they designed the American version so that the act of inserting the cartridge eventually causes the contacts inside the console to snap off, instead of just having a slot like the Famicom or any other cartridge-based system. That and the system's habit of randomly erasing a cartridge's RAM will endear it to me forever.

I must've had one of the most durable models around... My dad used to test the effects of a butter knife bridging some of the contacts; the effects were hilarious, and, in the case of Friday the 13th, gave you almost god-like stuff.

My NES still works. I kind of assumed that they were built really well.
Random memory: I had just finished Mario 3 for the first time and was so proud I left the system on for a few days with the music looping. I was quite young and accidentally left it on for another 2 weeks as I went on holiday. Came back and it was still looping. :D

That's because (

Also, Ulukai, I got mine sent and back in 5 days. Not half bad, considering it was basic post to and from.

Five days? Took me almost a month.
