My repair was free, except for the envelope and bubble wrap I sent it back in. Took a fortnight.
Also, when something fails a warranty, isn't the warranty automatically renewed? I know this is the case in Australia. How come it costs $100 for you guys, has the warranty expired?

The red ring warranty is three years. But my regular warranty expired, so if my disc drive failed I'd have to pay to replace it. Fortunately the red-ring seems to warrant a full replacement, which happily comes with a new disc drive. And whatever warranty I had left on the old unit is just transferred over to the new one.

I don't think I've known anyone who owned a NES and didn't experience the blinking-red-light-of-death after a few years.
Yeah, mine gave up the ghost after nearly 15 years.

Also, Ulukai, I got mine sent and back in 5 days. Not half bad, considering it was basic post to and from.
Impressive. To be fair to Microsoft, mine did go over the Christmas/New Year break, so not only would the repair centre not have been open, but there was probably a Christmas backlog, too.

Front loader NES was a POS. The top loading redesign, on the other hand, is perfect.
Personally, I wouldn't mess around inside of a 360 unless you know your warranty is already gone. The failures are most likely caused by thermal stress causing mechanical stress that breaks the solder joints between the GPU/CPU and PCB. You aren't fixing that on your own and better cooling is probably just prolonging the inevitable. NVIDIA is having the same problem with their graphics cards because of issues with the ROHS solder they use.
