Xbox version of TDS sold 93,400 copies... - by Komag

According to my July 06 issue of Xbox Magazine, according to The NPD Group (apparantly the industry leader in sales tracking), through Feb '06 and excluding Walmart sales (can't track those for some reason?), Thief Deadly Shadows on Xbox sold 93,400 copies
I wonder how many PC copies sold?
It also says DXIW (Xbox version) sold 195,200 copies
(They were both in a feature of the "20 Best Xbox Games You Never Bought")
I guess those numbers are pretty low. By comparison, the article was also saying great games like Riddick and Jade Empire "only" sold 251,600 and 378,400, whereas "they should've sold a million".

interesting numbers. My theory is that DX and Thief were primarily PC games and as such wouldn't do well on a console as most FPS(neakers) don't. So I guess the fans just stayed away from the console versions. Plus with the failure of DXIW (a sad day for me) people just hung their heads in defeat. However, i'd really like to see the PC sales charts, that'd be interesting.

It's a real pity. My first introduction to Thief was TDS and using the 3rd person on the XBox. I think the thing is with PC gaming the pure choice of games and the niches it can do is very broad, whereas with console games it's just not the case, and porbably too expensive to do.
Some genres such as platformers, FPS's and racing games just sell lots on consoles due to the pick up and play elements of them, like sports games. Sneakers have heavyweights like MGS and Splinter Cell to contend with. Most people who like sneakers will go in the direction of those two on consoles, and in the process, miss out on the best sneaker of them all...

It's also real predictable. Any fool could have told Ion Storm that Thief wouldn't translate to the console market, no matter how much they watered it down and bastardised it.

Interesting. I wonder what the total number sold is, including walmart and PC sales.
Still, there are plenty of other factors involved here - marketing, advertizing, DX:IW getting the bum rap on the net 6 months before... The hits just keep on coming.

Very true. It's funny also that a more shallow Thief in the form of Thief DS is also the best sneaker on the consoles. Shows what high tech gadgets and hard men do for console sales.
