I bought a Wireless 360 controller (complete with attachable wire) for my PC.
When I plugged it in, Windows XP64 auto downloaded driver stuff for it, but it still did not seem to work.
I downloaded the Gaming Software pack from Microsoft (

No luck. When I press the Guide Button, all 4 lights just flash (which apparently means it is ignoring the wire and trying to establish an Infra Red connection (!)
I then read on the internet that the controller is sold in separate versions, one for XBox and Windows, one for just Xbox. The picture on Amazon also has the Windows logo on the box.
As you can see from my attached camera shot, mine only has the Xbox logo. (And the manual inside makes no mention of Windows)

Does it mean that even if I do buy the wireless connection set, that it still will not work because this controller is Xbox360 only ?
Why won't it work with the wire ? Because it is Xbox360 only, and not Windows ? Or is there a way to make it work that I did not try ?

My understanding is that the wireless controllers do not send control information through the USB wire. It is solely for charging the batteries. At least that was my friends experience. He went out and bought a GfW Xbox controller and had no issues.
I'm guessing you'll need a bluetooth adapter or something to get it to work.. I'm not sure what protocol Xbox uses. And even then you'll probably have to hack it or find a 3rd party program.

IIRC, using a wireless 360 controller on the PC required a wireless adapter from Microsoft - it's not a standard connection method. They've since discontinued them, so you'll likely have to find a place online that still has some.
That, or return the wireless controller for a wired one.

Either resize that or put it in a link or (ideally) get out.

Thankyou for your help.
I read about the discontinuation of the Wireless Adapter thingy, and that you probably also need to buy a special self powered USB Hub or something too.
I think it is cheaper just to buy a new Wired Controller. It should work if it says 'Windows' on the packaging , right ?
Damn sneaky Hong Kong store in the Golden Games Centre !! I made it clear I wanted it for PC !!
EDIT - no chance of a refund, I opened the packaging. The guy would just deny I ever said anything about needing it for a PC etc etc etc

Well, now you have to buy a 360. Don't worry, it's worth it.

You don't need a hub, I wouldn't think, though I power all my USB hubs as a matter of course. You just need the wireless adaptor - I have one myself.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/1478/323127362440overview1.gifThe MS 360 pad Wireless Receiver for Windows was discontinued a while ago. You either A. pick one up second hand or B. Buy a "Wireless 360 Controller for Windows", which specifically ships with one (I'm not sure if these are still in print though). BTW, all 360 controllers are the same - i.e. the only difference with say the wired pad for Windows is that it comes with a driver disc.
The others are correct, the Play and Charge kit only charges the battery pack. It absolutely does not act as a data cable.
