Yes because fighting black blobs and geometric spaceships is totally interesting.
How many people here would be up in arms if they made Thief 4 an ARPG because stealth games don't sell enough? It was a boneheaded move no matter how you look at it.

If however they'd made a proper Thief 4 and then announced a second side game that had rpg elements I'd be totally cool with that.
Which is the same reason why I'd be totally fine with the FPS XCOM since Firaxis already put out a turn based one.

Thief 4 could be a Call Of Duty clone and it wouldn't budge my rage-o-meter. Unless Eidos came to my house and broke my Thief 1-3 CD's it would have no impact whatsoever on my enjoyment of those games.
Consumers being hung up on the way IP's are treated seems just as silly as companies taking random IP's and applying them to totally unrelated products. It's one thing to dislike Syndicate or XCOM or whatever because you think the game is awful, it's another to act like your entire reality is shattered because some corporation uses a brand they own in a way that doesn't suit you.

It's when its the only game in development that there is an issue. Hence why Syndicate and the Unreal Tournament wannabe Shadowrun (the 2007 one not Returns) bombed royally.
More to the fact it's when a game has nothing at all to do with the franchise its named after. For example if they made Halo game where all you did was shoot fish in barrels or a Final Fantasy game where all you did was sing. Oh wait they already did that :p

Being a fan of a gaming franchise is no different than being a fan of Coca Cola or something, except if you don't like new formula Thief you can always drink Thief Classic. If you want to satisfy your thirst with something new and refreshing, it's not like there aren't a million other drinks out there.

I like the flavor of the new Thief formula, but I just wish they didn't use High Fructose Cornsolitis Syrup :(
