Title says it all really. When I exit Thief 2 after playing for a while, a lot of my icon pictures are either missing (ie. they show the 'no icon' picture) or they have seemingly random pictures.
I've experienced similar phenomena occasionally in the past with other games, only very rarely though. Usually, switching between 16 bit and 32 bit in display properties will fix up the icons, but in this case, I need to do this in conjunction with a restart to restore the icons to their natural state.
I had a look in the FAQ and did some searching and was surprised to find no other threads about this. Has anyone else experienced this, or am I the only one?
My system specs are...
AMD X2 3800+
A8N-SLI Premium Mobo
2GB RAM
256MB 7800GT

It's a problem of the icon cache, and not related to Thief. You can rebuild the cache by switching the colour depth (like you did) or deleting the cache file directly. The location of that file depends on your Windows version, and in case of XP even on the service pack level.
You can also try to (
