Zillameth... An idea suddenly occurred to me....
Say, can it be that the Mechanist originates from those hammerites who works in the clockwork?

It would be pure speculation to assume so (or otherwise). There are reasons to believe Mechanists emerged as a general schism, rather than secession of a single branch. For example, there is no definitive doctrinal difference between Mechanists and Hammerites. That is, they don't argue as to whether they should eat cheese - they all eat cheese, only they wouldn't give cheese to each other. Also, many Mechanists are clearly newcomers, because Hammers don't seem to accept women into their ranks.
Cog was probably chosen as symbol of the order, simply because it looks nice on a banner. :-)

Actually, story-wise, the Mechanists had the cog on their banner because their technological advances began making great leaps forward when they stopped putting an emphasis on the hammer and saw just how much they could do with gears. The gear, coupled with a boiler was the next big leap that followed. Then, after they were well on their way, the Precursor stuff was discovered. The gear, the boiler, and the Precursor stuff together made them powerful.

The only thing I don't know yet is how we would make proper audio without Eric Brosius...
I can handle that !! :)
