Its not about the quantity of fan missions its about the quality.
A lot of the best fan missions have been released in the recent years.
Also many fan missions that get released nowadays use a lot of high quality objects and textures and need therefore way more longer development time.
So overall i would say we are in the golden age of fan missions now! (Insanely good fan mission projects like The broken goddess or keeper of infinity, etc. are worked on right now).
So maybe the best age for fan missions is still to come yet :)
