Yet again, Eve online. - by The Alchemist

So just for old time's sake and to dork around a little bit (and because I'm strangely excited by the new Captain's Quarters) I went to log on to my old account to find that it had been banned in my absence. The only thing I can think of is that it got hacked.
Really, really hoping I can get my stuff back.

They haven't even replied to my petition yet, so it seems like I'm going to miss the launch. Sigh.
Does EVE ban accounts for inactivity? I assumed they just held on to things like WOW, but maybe not...

They didn't ban my account which was inactive for about 3-4 years so I wouldn't have thought that was the cause.

My account had been inactive since 2006 or so and they reactivated it without problems.

It must be hacking, then (because it certainly wasn't banned while I was actually playing!). If they don't get back to me within a couple more days I'll quit the petition route and go for a support e-mail proper.

As I said in the RPS thread, I'm pretty sure this whole economy is fueled by Bitcoins.

Wait wait - wtf? Why do you even need 3 currencies? You need to exchange ISK to PLEX to get real-life money... why not exchange ISK to real life money directly? Likewise, why Aurum to buy clothes, why not use ISK directly?

It's easy to look at an article and jump to conclusions, but its not as simple as that.
Plexes are a way for people to buy game time with currency earned in-game, so that in theory you could play for free, many people make enough isk to buy game-time.
There are many different types of player, some people pvp, some sit in safe space and just trade/mine/etc, alot of people epeen.
Some people have rather alot of isk, so buying a t-shirt with in-game currency really is nothing to them.
As for paying for it with real life currency, buying "plexes" was introduced to try and counter people buying isk from farmers, with the benefit of adding another isk-sink to the game. The fact that you can go through a very laborious process to buy stuff in the game with real life currency is kind of secondary.
And as you've said, Eve gamers are among the most nerdy, I'd go as far as to call them among the most hardcore of neckbeards, they can afford to buy in game stuff if they want, but it isn't as popular as you'd imagine, in fact there's something of a stigma attached to people who purchase in game stuff with IRL money.
But please, feel free to knee-jerk and bandwagon as you see fit.
