A few days ago SNAFU loaned me 16 million ISK to buy a Brutix battlecruiser, but as I don't have much time to play this week, I invested it on the market instead, along with my own 14 million. Now, 5 days later, I paid him back and still have 12 million ISK, but also have those various goods on the market for sale. Once they are all sold out (shouldn't take more than a few more days), I'll have about... haven't done the exact math, but I guess about 100 million ISK, which will be enough to buy the best battlecruiser (Myrmidon) and still have 50 million to invest back on the market. :D

Gah. I gave in, I caved.
I have a love hate relationship with caldari. They can currently do the highest damage, their ships are very strong on the firepower and can have ridiculously good tanks too, some end game shield tank setups are just monstrous. Shield tanking means they get few mid slots for ECM, though, and they like to keep range which means they generally dont do that much ECM anyway. Webbers are 10km range, Nos are 25km range, etc. So typically a strong gank Raven requires a wingman, someone to web and otherwise neutralize the target and keep him from just warping away while they eat torpedos. Missiles/torps also have to be the most satisfying weapons in the game, and their prowess at missions/rat hunting are unarguable. Caldari ships also require the least amount of SP to fly them well. The problem then, other than their range preference and speed of impact (missiles + long range = plenty of time to go "oh shit let me get out of here")? Their ships are terribly ugly. I mean, (
http://www.destabiliser.com/eveships/albums/caldari/battleships/caldariraven.jpg) who the hell designs these things anyway? I'm all for function over form but jesus man. I've always favored (
http://www.destabiliser.com/eveships/albums/userpics/10001/amarrnavyapocalypse03.jpg) Amarr ships but recently they've been nerfed and are not all that powerful anymore although they do have some of the best tanks in the game. So I had decided to just go with (
http://www.destabiliser.com/eveships/albums/gallente/assaultships/gallenteenyo.jpg) Gallente ships, they are quite pretty most of the time, can do very large DPS, and favor close range warfare. Nothing quite as fatal as being in webber/nos range of a megathron decked out with a full set of tech 2 neutron blasters. Not to mention they have some deadly drone/nos ships, which specialize in neutralising your cap/everything while drones tear you apart. So I went ahead and made a gallente and trained gallente skills until I bought one of these babies: a (
http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?srv=img01&img=/6/12/26/f_20061226i_c9fdm_c4cfbe24.jpg) hyperion. I decked it out with the biggest railguns I could fit, and went out on some hunting. The damage is ok or my skill level, the range is nice, but god it's boring. Railguns and blasters alike, they're just so goddamn boring. It's not like artillery, which makes a loud bang, or lasers which make a satisfyingly sick fizz/buzz not to mention the laser effect itself, or missiles which are terribly satisfying to use and make enemy ships tremble and careen. No no, it's just plow plow short white light enemy's being hurt. I couldn't stand it, it was so boring. (
http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?srv=img01&img=/6/12/26/f_20061226i_c9fdm_d96cd70a.jpg) (Another hyp screeny for the hell of it.)
So I said fuck it and started training in caldari frigates/cruisers so I can fly a drake. Luckly I already have the battlecruiser skill, and a good mess of required skills. It's not like switching from boats to planes it's mostly the same thing, I just need some shield skills and some more missile skills and I'm set. In five days I can fly and use a drake properly, in 30 days I'll have every missile and shield skill I can think of. Much quicker than the 3 or 4 months it would take me to get the required blaster/drone/navigation/ecm skills required to pilot a gallente battleship effectively. No I'm not saying they're bad, not at all, simply illustrating the fact that caldari ships require so much less sp to use properly.
So yeah, in a few days I'll be blowing shit up in style, and some time after that I'll join the ranks of all those other cookie cutter huge damage raven ships that bombard you with ridiculously powerful torpedos. Function over form, after all. :erm:
I just spotted a drake so I took some screenies: It looks like some sort of stealth catamaran with a ton of missile racks on its back.

(Besides Caldari are going to get a whole lot prettier: (

Word. Especially early in the game, when you can only fit one or two 75mm railguns on your frigate. "Plop-plop-plop" - I bet if CCP recorded the sounds of water pistols firing, it would be more exciting than those railguns.

Rockets are especially fun early in the game, as then you generally can't fly ships with a lot of weapon slots and can only carry small weapons anyway, which means you won't get to see and hear that big a bang. But fit just two of the better (= faster firing) rocket launchers on a tristan or some other frigate and you can see some quite nice and satisfying effects. One rocket each 1.5 seconds and the close range needed for those (about 4-5 km) means just one thing - FUN! And LOTS of fireworks. :D
Also I did one NPC mission a week ago, where I had to battle about 12 enemy frigates armed with Gremlin EMP rockets. It was set up in such a way, that the acceleration gate hurls you right in the middle of the frigates, which are formed in a perfect circle around you. They also all target you as soon as you are in range, which means they achieve lock and start firing at exactly the same time. When looked from above the flying plane, it looks as if your ship has some sort of halo of death, with bright white rockets coming out of the 12 outermost points of this halo, all at the same time, slow moving at first, then suddenly accelerating halfway to your ship, and 0.5 seconds later a big KABOOOOM when they all strike you. Hot damn, it was so awesomely looking and sounding, that even if I had lost my (very expensive, 50 million ISK worth) ship to those nasty little buggers, I wouldn't have been mad.
And because I'm on vacation now, the 600mhz Celeron processor here can't really handle the game that well, which means I can only log in to check my market orders and fly on autopilot through hi-sec systems. But as soon as I get back, I'll install Fraps and make some nice short videos to help convert more non-believers to the cause. :cheeky:

Why can't I convince my friends to play this :\ Now I'm stuck playing Final Fantasy XI. I love the screenshots from this game and really enjoyed the trial, but it was kinda lonely on my own.

I found the short range weapons to pose problems when you have someone firing at you at 15 km+ and they're also usually part of a group. I switched to artillery on my ships, which could fire at 20km+, they had big problems close range(because of low turning speed and tracking) but if you flew off in a straight line and maintained your distance you could pick off even 3-5 enemies at a time. Against a single enemy it was unbeatable. A non-energy weapon also did wonders for my shield boosters. All of this is for Minmatar and small only level 1 missions however, I didn't go past the trial period.
Funnily enough, I went back to the middle ranged weapons, especially the ammo, play off the strengths of your weapon. I can't remember if at the end my destroyer had medium lasers or artillery, but I had tried everything.(except composites, hybrid, whatever) Medium lasers and artillery are long range. Medium lasers I believe would qualify as 'medium long range' in the grand scheme of things :cheeky:
Minion, what will you do together? More than just running missions I hope, I'll be just as lonely if there's no purpose.

Heh, after last night I think I will probably join you guys. I need some more info on how though. I quit playing Final Fantasy XI from boredom last night. Need something to fill my "wasting time" timespace.
