I'm sure I could find some thread to put this in, but thread necromancy, etc...
I started out with TDS, and it hooked me in, and then I played the first two games. I played TDS about a year ago, and have been playing with dromed, the first two games, and various FMs since.
Recently I threw in TDS to revisit The Cradle, and I must say that in retrospect that I now understand entirely the older players complaints about TDS. Don't get me wrong, I love TDS, but my god are the controls rough in comparison to the first two. I tried to lean, and kept moving while doing so??? And the movements are so choppy and exaggerated. Precisely which tweaks do I use to get it to control more like the first two games? I don't want to change the key layout, or atomic blue, or menus or anything, just the character movements for Garret.
And while I loved the cityscape the first time through, trying to get from my save to The Cradle, instead of just starting there was actually quite annoying.
On another related note that easily could go elsewhere, I must admit that The Cradle was very atmospheric of course, but that knowing that (don't read if you haven't played it)
all it takes is 2 flashbombs per puppet,
really took a major edge off of it. I had them all down for the count in 20 minutes. Still freaky, but nowhere near as much as the first time through.
Maybe I should try to ghost it instead...
I think I will throw in RTTC now...

Tiger-boy, I think you're missing part of the equation. He's re-playing the Cradle. That really has fuck-all to do with inventory.
When I replay THC or RTC, I'm not as freaked as I was the first time I played them, 'cause I know I can take down a haunt with a backstab, and eliminate the zombies (barring me forgetting where they are and stepping too damned close) the same way - hell, even an apparition is something of a letdown - it goes to cast, I hit it, it reels back and thwack-thwack-thwack, it's gone.
And if you want to talk about what our 'Shadow of a Thief' is carrying - he must have a bigger bag than Santa Claus on his back to carry all the goddamn loot he picks up. Candlesticks, plates, torcs, Lost City treasures, tapestries, masks... they're all pretty bulky, but he seems to manage it. So I have no problem with the fact that he's got room to spare for other gear.
One thing I will agree on - the movement characteristics in TDS are clunkier than TDP or TMA. I mark it off as a side-effect of trying to add more body-awareness.

Solabusca, 'tis good to hear thy thoughts. I remember thy days at the short lived Ion Boards. I miss those boards.

Solabusca, if you knew anything about real thieves, then you would know that they would actually carry lots of small bags and lots of small, thin rope.
Then they would simply fill a bag, open a window and lower their loot, outside, with their henchmen or novices collecting their "ill gotten gains".
(And sorry, but having 10, or far less, Flashbombs might
definitely effect your rambo-like Cradle gameplay plans, mate?)
For me, I simply put it on Expert and Ghosted about 99 percent of it!
First off... you have no concept of how real thieves work, do you? REAL thieves have bugger-all to do with Thief.
Secondly... how often does Garret work with henchmen, novices or partners? How often do you pause in game to lower things out the window? Oh, wait, was that a resounding NEVER? I thought so.
So don't feed me this line about "real thieves".
As to equipment - in TDP and TMA it was possible to buy up a slew of flashbombs and water arrows every mission with a store option.
You can CHOOSE to collect flashbombs, arrows of different sorts, etc, but you can also CHOOSE to minimize your equipment. TDS is the same in this respect - you don't HAVE to use any equipment at ANY point.

Every time I see one of tiger@sound.net's posts, for moment I think we've been invaded by another spambot.
EDIT: Agh! The forum software even automatically turns his name into a link!

Well, at least now you can email him directly to tell him how you feel. :erg:
The irony of that observation is that if that is his email, he's exposing it to spambots the world over in the worst way.

this is getting old. i accept all the games together for what they are, even thief 3, runt as it is.
IMO thief 3, though fine by itself and pretty good by ion storm standards, would do well with a remake, if only to make the environs larger and the writing just a little better. as well as a different engine- flesh just doesn't cut it. which leads me into something else- some of the noobs calling for a remake of thief 1 and 2 into the thief 3 engine have it all wrong- i'd love to see a thief 3 retromake, but ultimately i'd like to see all 3 games remade into a different engine (such as unreal 3, which seems like it could handle the large environs found in classic thief.) aside from physics, improved models and textures, as well as a sprucing up of some of the more bare places (i think escape should at least be pleasant to LOOK at, if not actually play...) nothing would be changed, except maybe redo thieves' guild a bit. the sewers are just too confusing.
