If we were living in a near future most people would be very absent minded to notice it because their implants will make them live in a permanent video game / alternate reality situation, probably leading to more deaths because of such an advanced abstraction level of reality.

Actually, I believe entirely that in the future people will be playing games and working in a near-permanent virtual world, and the money they make in the game will support their real-life self.
And then there's going to have to be a virtual world to escape from the tediousness of the virtual world, and so on and so on recursively.
The dumb thing about that article though is that it claims the PSP 'caused' the guy to step in front of a train, as if his own stupidity didn't come into play.

The alt reality would included components related to the real world that would help maintain real world vigilance.
And it'll be harder to play level X if you're on the train than if you're on a bus.
