Hrm. I'll admit the interface has some issues, but 'horrid mess'? Really? What exactly is it that makes you say it's a horrid mess (aside from it being the perfect jump-off point for Yo Momma! jokes, of course)?
I've always felt the interface was pretty intuitive; pretty much like Civilization, really...

I love Alpha Centauri, but it's UI really isn't one of its strong points. I wouldn't call it overly obtuse or anything, but it's nowhere near as immediate and user friendly as what we have in Civ 4 and 5.

The only other Civ I played was in 1997. No idea which one. It was okay.
ACs interface is fine IMHO.

As far as I'm concerned, people will be far better off if they approach Civ: Beyond Earth as a Civ game inspired by AC than as any kind of direct/spiritual successor. There'll hopefully be less impotent nerd rage that way when things inevitably turn out different than a segment had hoped.
Since that's (

Well, sure, but then they were both released after AC, so naturally they would've included improvements on previous games' UI.
At the same point, I don't think it's overly obscure at all, given its age. It's hardly X-COM:

GenGaming really needs a dedicated "game trailers dub" thread.
Also, it really pisses me off that DNA died before the AAA industry took off. I think I would enjoy a modern, big budget game penned by him (not that Bureaucracy and Starship Titanic weren't fantastic).
