McCain doesn't even represent center-right for me. Center-right for me would be the Rockefeller republicans, with Bush I being the most prominent representative--the guy that called out Reagan's supply-side philosophy as voodoo economics but was still pragmatic enough to be his VP; whose favorite word was "prudence" and whose base motivation was duty to serve the country first; and who was abandoned by the Rep fringe of his own time (Gingrich et al) like a crucified martyr for bucking political dogma & doing what was absolutely in the best interest of the country at the time (raising taxes despite promising "read my lips, no new taxes").
In my view of it, a center right position like that is now non-existent, with no promise of coming back to life in the foreseeable future. It's a position without a party.

Also...here's the first solution that seems reasonable to me, as it both addresses funding needs and provides a means of tackling the sovereign debt crisis in the long term.
Quote:
It was under Jimmy Carter in 1978 that the structure of government funding and reporting was changed. Previously, each agency had to apply every year for their budget. Then, to save time, Carter indexed them to CPI. When the CPI took off dramatically into 1980, the cost of government exploded.
Now Republican leaders in the House of Representatives are floating a plan to reopen some shuttered federal agencies by passing small, individual funding bills for them. I will say this now – ELIMINATE AUTOMATIC FUNDING MAKE EVERY AGENCY JUSTIFY THEIR SPENDING EACH YEAR – TIME CONSUMING BUT THAT WILL KEEP CONGRESS OCCUPIED SO THEY DO NOT PASS OTHER MEANINGLESS NONSENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The proposed plan, which would ease some of the pain of a government shutdown that has begun as spending authority expired, was presented to rank-and-file House Republicans at a meeting in the Capitol. We should extend the debt ceiling which will happen at the end of the day anyhow, and return the budget to ”selective funding” measures on an annual basis. This may actually reduce government size and spending.

Aren't both parties to right of centre that it' almost pointless making a distinction? Your Democrat party makes our Conservative party look like Greenpeace.

Well neither is rooting for some sort of scandanavian liberal utopia, no. There's still a distinction between sensible centre right and whatever crazy the teapots are pushing for.

It's like a choice between a far right, authoritarian plutocracy or slightly more insane far right authoritarian plutocracy with added religious references.

I quit listening to the news because it very seldom talks about anything useful or relevant to my life. Frankly, the US government shutdown doesn't bother me much because why should I let it, even if I'm going to feel the effects of it through my dad being furloughed?
Life is short. Worrying about what the news tells you each day is only going to make it even shorter. The saddest thing that could happen to a human being in life is to go from the cradle to the coffin only to realize that he never really lived.
I'm going to make the most of my life while I still have it. You're more than welcome to do the same. Here's a quote from one of my favorite teachers on the subject of self-help and human potential:
"Most people tip-toe through life, hoping to make it safely to death." -- Bob Proctor

By all means, continue the conversation if you want to. I just posted something for people to consider in the off-chance that they actually want to do something with their lives.
