No lyrics, but I do remember that BB was the first rap I'd ever heard when they came out back in the early 80's. I was a bit of a Van Halen/Iron Maiden guy back then, but "Fight For Your Right" had that heavy guitar in it. I didn't hate rap or anything, just thought it wasn't for me. But I remember thinking, "Hey, those guys are alright." I never really got deep into them, but I surely would have never paid attention to other bands I love, like Onyx, Cypress Hill, Boo-Yah Tribe, and Public Enemy if they hadn't crossed over to the mainstream. So I have BB to thank for that. Guess it's time to start checking out the back catalogue.

I didn't take an interest in music until my mid-teenage-years. That's when I started watching to a lot of MTV and listening to songs on the radio. I figured out that the kinda music I liked the most was hip-hop, and the group in that genre I liked the most were the Beastie Boys. Their "Sounds of Science" Anthology was the first (double) album I ever owned. A wild couple of CDs that covered not just rap and rock but also their various experiments in bossanova, country and jazzy instrumentals. I played the shit out of those CDs for years on my parents stereo, on my computer while playing Quake, and of course I copied them to casette so I could play them on the carstereo once I bought my first car. Good memories.
RIP MCA

The one set of BB lyrics I'll always remember is:
"I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast,
but I'm intercontinental when I eat French toast."
The Move (Hello Nasty)Hello Nasty was actually the first BB album I ever listened to. We were living in Singapore at the time and it was my sister (I believe), of all people, who bought the album. Which is pretty odd, all things considered. She doesn't hate hip hop
per se, but it was never her thing, not now and
certainly not then - we're talking
Enrique Iglesias here :eww:. My guess is she picked up the album because she liked both
Intergalactic and
Body Movin', which were pretty big at the time. Also, the (

At any rate, that album got a LOT of playtime, both at home and in the car. I grew to love it.
It's only once I got to university in London that I realised that
Hello Nasty only covers about half of what BB are capable of. A friend lent me the Beastie's previous records, and
Paul's Boutique through
Ill Communication especially showed me what diverse styles their music covers. I mean, this is a hip hop band that's released two (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_In_Sound_from_Way_Out!_%28Beastie_Boys_album%29) instrumental (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mix-Up) albums! Whilst still predominantly hip hop,
Ill Communication's first songs alone cover:
* Hip Hop (incl. the sound of a dog barking and a flute)
* Punk
* Hip Hop (incl. the sound of sheep bleating)
* Instrumental
* Funk-infused Hip Hop
* Rock
* Hip Hop (incl. turntable scratching)
* Latin music
* etc.
Later on there's even a Buddhist chant.
And then they dabbled in (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSUp__AS2uI) country music.
None of this wide range of music should work when thrown together like this, but it does, it so does. I think that's what makes them so great.
Also, this:

RIP once again.

I ride on the bus into the city everyday
I sit on my seat and I dream myself away
I dream I'm on an island with that foxy lady too
But when I awaken I must be mistaken I'm on third avenue
Won't you take me away
And take away me

Great lyrics guys, keep 'em coming. I can never get enough of the boys and their lyrical madness.
Now (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84954) THIS was a funny as hell flashback from here - I can't even believe that was almost 8 years ago, feels like about 2.
"I got a girl in the Castle and one in the pagoda
You know I got rhymes like Abe Vigoda."
