Whoa what's up with this? I just lurked a bit and I can't shrug off the feeling it's just like SomethingAwful. Similar forum breakdown, similar megathreads, even some of the thread icons are the same I swear. Is it just an incredible coincidence or some sort of an official offshot o.0 ?
It's basically a SA clone created by Garry Newman, the guy behind Garry's Mod, originally for discussion of the game. It's pretty much SA's paste-eating illegitimate sibling.

Aye it's probably one of the best for game development, many helpful people and wealth of information!
I'm really surprised I hadn't heard of it before, I passed it along to some other people in my major and it looks to be a great resource. Thanks.

Spot on there. Facepunch is a mental wasteland; at least SA has some good threads.

Muz, haven't I seen you post in AV Club?
Maybe. I've only posted there about four times though. It's a bit too much of an anarchic mess for me. There does seem to be a core of regulars though.

As for Muz's sidebar: it's a funny, well-put together show with shout-outs that adults can derive humour from, plus it's adorable as all get-out. Discovering it happened to coincide with a rather painful time in my personal life and I'll be forever grateful that I was able to turn aside every so often and lose myself in watching cute cartoon ponies as a distraction.
I've never watched it, but it does make some sort of sense. I've been impressed by the quality of a lot of kids cartoons in recent years. I thought stuff like The Power Puff Girls and Invader Zim were sort of a self aware oddity, but I caught a couple of random things here and there to suggest the spirit has spread (actually I think it started with the Mighty Mouse remake yonks ago. Then Animaniacs picked it up. Then Renn and Stimpy blew the whole thing wide open)
At any rate it's great for (

Socially, just here. I carry out all of my science discussion in some groups on LinkedIn. Other than that, I use a little social networking site called facebook and that's it.

People use LinkedIn for actual discussion?
I mostly thought it was for cyberstalking in...a more exclusive fashion.
Well, that and for prompting seething professional jealousy everytime someone changes "Position:Postdoctoral research associate" to "Position:Research Fellow", or similar.:erg:

I got a really quick, really effective protein digestion protocol sorted out in about 3 days after discussing a few techniques on a chromatography and proteomics group I'm a member of. It's been a life saver on several other occasions too. Reading the literature is still the best option, but if time is premium, then crowd-sourcing is the way to go.

I sometimes hang on (
http://forums.massassi.net/vb3/forumdisplay.php?8-Discussion-Forum) Massassi Temple. It's a forum for an old games series that used to be revolutionary at its time. Mainly though these days they discuss any current topic. Often exactly the same that are discussed here. People know each other since way back and it shows sometimes. But the place is kept working and tidy, assholes are thrown out. And when I lately noticed that their sister site (jkhub.net) had gone down due to DNS issues they had an alternative address up in no time.

Are they a bunch of insufferable nostalgia whores too?
[edit] Oh wait, it's Star Wars related. Of course they are.
