jtr7,
What I am saying is that I don't find enjoyable playing stealthy in an environment which is huge and full of hostile creature because the tension drops inevitably. In my case, I don't find myself motivated being unnoticed because exploring a huge level using this kind of strategy would take hours and would be tedious and repetitive.
I am not here to have my tastes in game criticized because that's not the point. My point is to get an answer to a simple question: are there enormous levels full of monsters in Thief II, just like it was in Thief I?
If the answer is yes, I will simply not play it. Easy enough?

I answered: no there are not.
(except maybe one level)

He'll get all the way through then hit SoulForge, with it's wide sprawling architecture and mechanical monsters and get pissed off
Best advice? Call of Duty.

The best solution for you is Solitaire.
By the way, if you mind exploring vast levels full of hostile creatures, I take it you've never played Mario?

Hello!
Hi there, Salk!
Don't listen to everybody else in this thread!
I perfectly understand how you're feeling, because I felt like that myself when I first started playing Thief!
When I first started playing Thief I fell in love with that first mission. It was brilliant. Then the second mission started and it was...well...running away from zombies. Which I hated. But then it turned back into being a sneaky stealth game and I liked it again. THEN the following mission was all just enormous caverns and monsters everywhere and I got lost and...meh. I started skipping levels. I kept getting stuck. I didn't "feel" the game. I didn't appreciate it. I got bored.
I heard about Thief 2, and that it got rid of the undead/monster missions. So I bought it, and played it, and...got bored with it quite quickly.
UNTIL a friend of mine said that he was stuck on the third mission. So I played it with him, and fell in love with the game.
I caught the Thief bug. I finished Thief 2, then eagerly restarted Thief 1 and played it all. I adored every mission. I appreciated the undead ones.
They're great games, but yeah...it took me a while to "feel" them.
You need to get to a point where you fall in love with the game for what the game is.
Maybe you should get Thief 2 first. But for story terms (and let's face it...the story in the Thief games is one of the highlights of the game) I feel you should play the first game first.
Thief is about a lot more than stealth. But you can hide from the monsters; the stealth does work in the same way. And you can run away from the monsters, too (especially the zombies, they're slow and give up chasing pretty quickly!). You shouldn't really ever be in a position where you have to fight monsters. The undead missions really are an important part of the Thief experience and although I groan a bit whenever there's an undead mission, if they weren't there in the games I'd be upset.
I think you're stuck in The Bonehoard. It's a confusing place. I don't know what to suggest really because I went from loathing that level (when I first played it) to really really enjoying it. I love it now.
You need to fall in love with Thief as a whole, rather than just the one aspect of it. And if that means you should play Thief 2, which is a bit of a more straightforward, slightly less exciting game than the first one, then maybe you should.
The levels in Thief 2 are generally much bigger than in Thief 1, but apart from one or two, are based in houses and on city streets.
But as I said...storywise, you should play the first game first.
Do let us know how you get on...and do post if you get stuck... I for one am certainly happy to give helpful advice. :)

Yes there are enormous levels.Maybe not full of monsters, depending on what you would consider "full",but yes. That is in no way a reason for not playing, but reasons to play.
My advice to you is ,take your time, use the blackjack and water arrows, fight only when you have to and run away when you can (in every level there are places where the AI can't get at you.Find and use them), save often, and use your maps.Once you've gotten used to playing this way it's a breeze. It won't take long and you will figure out what you can and cannot get away with. Then you can run amok.
I have to agree with the others ,that if you are having confrontations around every corner then you are playing wrong. It's called Thief. The game is about moving undetected.
Just another note.Until you have mastered TDP and TMA,stay well away from "The Cradle" in DS.lol:D

If you're stuck in "The Bonehoard":
I ran around like a maniac, got hoards of zombies to chase me ,found a safe spot, and then flashbombed them.
Make use of your holy water and fire arrows.Zombies are for the most part a joke.

Hello all again and thanks for the advice.
I especially wish to thank Blue Sky for his symphathy although I don't think I could possibly change my mind and start liking a level if I once hated it.
However, I am not such a helpless player. :p
I stopped playing the game after I retrieved the Eye (so well after the Bonehoard level). Up to then, I was not perhaps extremely fond of all levels but that didn't stop me from going ahead. My feelings about the whole were practically identical to Blue Sky's above.
It was many years ago, but the level I stopped at must have been Escape!.
Oh and lastly I wish to congratulate Herr_Garrett for his fine humour. A career's ahead... :joke:

You got to Escape?! You'd practically finished the game!
If you really don't want to just finish off the last couple of levels then I'd say maybe you really do have your fill of Dark Project and should move onto Thief 2, which as I said is more mansion/street based.
I think Thief 2 is more challenging, especially the later missions which seem to all be set in very brightly lit buildings with electric lights you can't turn off, no dark corners, and marble floors wherever you go!
Anyway, if you do decide to play, do let us know how you get on! :)
