I usually keep mine kinda bright, but thats just cuz i have bad eyes (im severely nearsighted w/o my contacts). I cant stay too far from the monitor or things kinda start to blur and blend after a few minutes... :erg: Thats what i get for being lazy and not turning off the light when i went to sleep as a kid, i guess..... Other than that, ive not needed to crack my monitor (a CRT) open for much of anything. My most recent one burnt itself out, someone left it on for like 2 days and the circuits almost caught fire (ironically, the day i got Nightfall, that kinda pissed me off).

Not only that Garret has above average eyesight, he's got a mechanical eye. At least on Deadly Shadows.

While playing thief during the day, I simply have no choice but to up the gamma as my wife doesn't allow me to cover the windows with blankets.
*whippish*
During the night, however, it's a different story. :D

Not only does Garrett have really good eyesight, and a mechanical eye, but you have to take into account dilation of his remaining organic eye. The game doesn't do this for you (some games do; Half-Life 2 comes to mind), so you should use the brightness and gamma controls to find a setting comfortable to you and assume it falls within the "Garrett's eyes are nothing but pupils" category. And of course it's not cheating to turn it up! What's cheating is if you can't see anything because there's light streaming through your window and causing glare. :)

What do you mean that in this dark tomb of mine there is too much light?
Impossible, ask mister zombie over there, he can't see me.

Has anyone found an LCD with good black levels? Since I've started playing Deadly Shadows and Call of Cthulhu lately the fact that my darks are so bright is quite distracting -- almost makes me want to go back to a CRT! Even with the brightness on 0 it's not dark enough.

You might also try messing around with your contrast, the higher is it the higher the difference between dark and light areas, but at some point you can try lower them both.

I play TDS so I can't see Garrett at all in the test screen, then turn up the sound so I can hear everything. And I only play after dark so I don't have to worry about covering up the windows. It's been so long since I've played the others, I can't remember what setting I usually put it on.

hmmm, i might seem crazy but with my LCD screen everything is about 500 times better than a CRT, better black, more vivid colors, and it just seems clearer. I've never had any problems with taffing about on it. So, try an LCD! you might be surprised!

I did - I bought several and returned them all. For most games they work quite well. For Thief, they don't.
