Hahaha! You're idea will never work out! It's far too crazy and zany!

Though you propose a world that is slightly more free to move around in, what you're describing is not that far off (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Hulk_%28video_game%29) Space Hulk. Nothing wrong with that, there should be more games like Space Hulk.
Also Commandos springs to mind. And there is a more recent game -abbreviated 'SS' or 'S2' or something like that, I forget - which doesn't emphasize stealth as much as commandos does, but has similar gameplay.

Dawn of War 2 is very much like that, Taffer36.

I would like to see the opposite. An RTS where you're the head of an operation and the individual generals/soldiers are smart enough to figure out what to do (including improvising if necessary) once their battalion is given orders. Sort of a real time version of a grand war game without the micromanaging.

Yeah, I like dethtoll's idea too. It would have to be a FPS but have a "world overview" map that you can control/plan things from.
What is the background to these massacres deth? Are they supposed to be other people doing the same thing as you but failing?
I don't know if I've put this down here before (I know I've posted it somewhere!) but a game of the book I am Legend. A FP survival horror where you have to maintain yourself and your defenses during the day in readiness for the onslaught every night.

Woah, never heard of this game. Watched some gameplay, yup. This is pretty much the basic idea of what I proposed, albeit super old school and dungeon crawler.

Seems kind of similar, but the main thing that I would want avoided is how RTS games in general allow you to select a full group of units, double click on an enemy group, and have your units stand and fire from an open, cover-free space.
I want a game that pays attention to cover, height, spread of units, flanking, etc. much like a typical shooter would.
Actually, watching the gameplay it looks like the game slightly follows this but sometimes doesn't. I see units firing from open space quite a bit, but it looks like there's some buildings that you can send units into for height advantage? That's a step in the right direction, for sure. I like this as well.

I like dethtoll's post-apoc roguelike FPS idea muchly.
dema: I'd love to see that idea come to fruition. It'd be very interesting to see reality 'fall apart' and holes in memories as you near places with brain damage, that'd be hella intriguing if done right.

Yeah, pretty much. The shadow beast would do most of the massacring, basically, and I wanted to drove home the point that A) you and your colony are forever alone and B) something is hunting you.

I suppose you're right. DoW2 is much more focused on your unit abilities than it is on cover, although you can take cover behind objects and you can garrison buildings.
The biggest problem I see is the amount of micromanaging you're proposing. It's hard enough when it's just you in a first-person perspective- trying to manage six units in this manner would be taxing, to say the least.

Then make it a multiplayer game.
Oh, wait, soldier, sniper, medic, multiplayer... that's beginning to sound like TF2.
It does sound a lot like Commandos, though.
