It would be traditional if the original character had been named Ebenezer Intercourse.

Just watched Rare Exports. That was one odd film. Not sure I'd watch it again though.
(The kid flipping the deus ex machina switch apropos of very little was a bit of a silly turn)

Bad Santa......because despite the hype and how dark the movie is, the movie's actually about a man who's very broken(and even nastier than dethtoll) who is moved by pity to, for the first time in years, do something nice for another human being.

I watched this yesterday. It was worth it. Sort of humanizing that their gesture was pretty futile in the whole scheme of things, but they did it anyway. It's an antidote to the Miracle on 34th Street trope, to be punished for doing the right thing but keep whistling with a knowing smile.
In terms of craft it was interesting that it was consistently tripolar, shifting equally between the French, Scots, and Prussians as equal protagonists throughout, and as they heard things from each other. It's rare to see movies really do that, especially war movies (I can't think of another one that's done it right now; Stalingrad & Letters from Iwo Jima were surprising enough showing a German and Japanese perspective in WWII, but this goes another step). But it makes it all the more interesting.
