My favourite game is "System Shock". Like most of my "favourite" things, I decided upon it many years ago; and I don't tend to re-evaluate that situation nowadays, so I'm pretty sure it will permanently be my favourite game. My favourite film and favourite album date from similar periods in my life. I feel they're all still justifiable choices, so going to the considerable effort of actually figuring out if each one still warrants the very top spot just isn't appealing. It's a done deal.

This being TTLG, you can't have a favourite game. All games are ridiculous, full of missed opportunities, the ones being anywhere close to good being the ones that set out to do far less than anything else. The perfect video game, the best game, is the one where you're in a grey corridor, and you don't have a gun, and you're flanked by faceless officers as you walk down, and as you approach the door at the end, the screen fades to black and the game says, 'You Are Dead', and you start over at the beginning.
This being TTLG, you can have a favourite game. All games are great, full of potential, the ones being anywhere close to bad being the ones that don't try to do something else. The perfect video game, the best game, is the one where you feel good at the end of it, okay? Satisfied with how it added meaning to your life, because it made you think and made you act, your dance performed within the restricted parameters of its design to produce something that resonated, a result that widened your perspective that little bit more.
This being TTLG, favourite games change from time to time. I followed a man down a street once, just to observe him and the small tics of his individuality - how he didn't quite maintain eye contact with people that passed by him, instead putting his hands in his pockets from time to time, fingering his phone or his keys. How he started to sing a small tune, but the moment he hit the second line he stopped, as if embarrassed that people would start staring at him. He ignored the beggar with the amputated arm, looked right through her, would have walked through her if he could. Instead he walked around her, like she was a lamp post or a tree, and took his phone out and started playing Candy Crush until he got home. I rang the doorbell a minute later, and he smiled when he saw me. 'Level 97! And I didn't pay a cent. What do you have to say about that now, huh?'
This being wherever you are, sometimes people just don't have many things to say about anything. The more's the pity.

If my recent cellphone use is anything to go by, my current favorite games are a toss up between chess, Adventure, and two old C64 games called Shogun and Rags to Riches.

Is Shogun the game where you wander around japanese gardens and stuff and have to gain followers? If so I used to love that.

Yes. I can sum up my preferred type of game now. It's where you start in a completely open world, nothing's stopping you going wherever you want, all the pieces you need are already out in the open from the start, and you have some long term project to maximize something to some goal ... in Shogun it's followers, in Rags to Riches it's your bank account. It's the kind of game I like picking at on the train. If it's in some nice artistic setting all the better.
