I think my comment spurred voters on to prove me wrong. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Unfortunately I dont have knickers to boil. Could a let's play of Hidden Agenda be an acceptable alternative? After all, you guys have built it up so much now it better blow my socks off.

Yes it would. :D

I would say it IS an acceptable alternative! :cheeky:

Just finished Hidden Agenda and although it is a very good and well designed mission, Calendra's Legacy is miles ahead in my book. Miles. The scope, story, custom content, side quests, varied settings, difficulty, unpredictability, non-linear design...all this puts it in the top 5 of all time for me. Hidden Agenda is clean, but also fairly straight forward and somewhat predictable. I like how the whole map circles back to the beginning.

I think the biggest problem with Calendra's Legacy is forced ghosting. Especially mission 2 can be quite annoying with forced ghosting and time limited objective. Then you get blackjack, but due to undead invasion all people die. So now you need sword, but it's not there. So there is more ghosting required and that's not for everyone.
Mission 1 only has forced ghosting in the police station, everywhere else you can get spotted and be fine. You just can't knock anybody out, but why would you if they don't alert to you. Mission 2 there is only forced ghosting for the first 10 minutes, and it's only towards the cathedral priests, nobody else. Mission 3 has no ghosting at all. So to say that is Calendra's Legacy's biggest problem is a stretch. It is a stealth game after all, and it's only on expert difficulty. The sword is available the entire mission at the wizard's guild in mission 2, just not in your room.

Mission 1 - enemies can also see if you steal from other people, I believe. Or maybe it's just cops. And my preference is to KO all people that can alert to me like cops. Mission 2 - yes, there is only first 10 min of forced ghosting and it's timed. But it's incredibly frustrating as you don't know exact path to cathedral and where place exactly an item. Plus inside of cathedral is well patrolled. I never knew there is sword in this mission, I never found it despite doing couple of playthroughs of this mission. Mission 3 has no forced ghosting, but there is a lot of very sensitive enemies and that's not less experienced players friendly aspect of this mission. Also my point was that Calendra's Legacy has just too high difficulty for many players and forced ghosting is just part of it.

I agree the difficulty is high, and that comes mostly from enemies being super sensitive after the undead being released in mission 2, and also after the opening hammer-thieves fight in mission 3. I never thought the time limit in mission 2 was that tough as it is right from the start. So if you miss it, you dont have to replay much. It also shows you clearly on the map the route to go. I think its even shown in red.

Didn’t vote, but kinda wish I had now. Personally I’m with Calibrator and Klatremus. Hidden Agenda is very good (and arguably more polished than CL) but to me it doesn’t feel anywhere near as inspired. Hidden Agenda feels like a perfect expression of the ‘Victorian Burglary Simulator’ we had so much of in the early 2000s, but CL really pointed to the Thief 2 we didn’t quite get. A Thief 2 which would have explored supernatural and magical subplots in more detail and with more assurance (this is all relative of course, Thief 2 is still one of the best games ever made).

Yes, you get pretty good map for this mission, but at the same time you were never in this mission before. You don't know where are patrollers and you need to dodge them, so there will be a lot of waiting involved. Plus you have short time limit and after getting into cathedral you need to figure out where to leave item. And most likely you have only 3 minutes to figure it out. It's stressful. Of course second run is much easier, because you have knowledge about route and enemies, so there is a lot less pressure. But we are talking about first runs.

I read through this thread a few days ago, and based on comments about it, I had to play through Hidden Agenda again.. I knew the name sounded familiar, and once I started playing, I knew where almost everything was, what to look for... it felt more than familiar. I betatested it for Mark!! It was probably the first mission I ever betatested, and I did the proofreading for all the texts in the games (it's in the credits). No wonder it felt like "home". :-D
