EDIT: I decided to change this to your personal must play FM list, rather than definitive. I'll keep the original post so everyone can know the context of the current post.

Something I've been thinking would be good, particularly to those who are new to Thief and FMs (Occasionally it seems some new fans do pop up!) is create a list of definitive FMs that must be played. This isn't to say only these are good and the rest are crap, but rather the ones that if you only play a handful of FMs, these are the ones to play. My nominations to such a list would be;
CoSaS 1: Gathering at the Inn
CoSaS 2: Mission X
The Inverted Manse
Embracing The Enemy
The 7th Crystal
Deceptive Preceptions
Ranstall Keep
Rose Cottage
A Guard Called Benny
These are just what come to my mind, and I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting. Basically I figure we will take the ones that come up the most and put them on the list.

I get the intention, but I'm afraid it's just going to become a yet another "your favorite FMs" thread.
Thing is, a "definitive" list should only include missions that play (and hopefully look) like OMs because players have various tastes. Some like puzzle elements, some don't. Some like horror missions, some don't. Some like highly challenging missions, some... you get the idea. Playstyles are also very different. The first definitive must-play that comes to mind is Thief 2X, which is pretty much another Thief game.
Other than that, I would include FMs that offer classic Thief experience, such as Geller's Pride, Saints and Thieves, Hidden Agenda, Heist Society, Bad Debts, Disorientation, Between these Dark Walls, Endless Rain, The Widow's Ire, etc. These are just off the top of my head.
As much as I love Mission X or, say, my all-time favorite Broken Triad, I don't think they would belong to such a list.

"Equilibrium" is one of the all time classics and was one of the first truly innovative FM's....it weighs in at 2MB

Filesize is quite probably the worst way to judge a fan mission. There have been wonderful little missions using stock resources for a Mb or two, and dreadful bloated gasbag missions which weigh in at hundreds of Mb.

I agree. You just can't choose a number of best fan missions, because people are different and have different taste; thus one might dislike an awesome fan mission or in reverse like an FM most of the players don't like.
But to mention some of the best missions: never forget the FMs made by Lady Rowena, they are truly amongst the best.

Just remember folks, Lady Rowena made her wonderful missions in Old Dark! We are very lucky to have such an important body of work, one that continues to entertain and inspire in equal measure. I did get the chance to PM chat with her briefly on textures/skins. She was always very gracious, and I do miss her around the old place.

I think before you decide on a "definitive must play list" you need to decide exactly how many FM will be on the list. There are hundred of excellent missions out there. So do you want the list to be top 100, top 50, top 10? There are great missions that probably wouldn't make any of those lists. Some of the missions mentioned in this thread might fit into a top 100, but not a top 50. And so on.
Personally, I would do a top 50. I don't know exactly how many missions are available today, but that's probably close to being the top 3-5%. As on example, I'd probably include COSAS 2 on that list, but not COSAS 1.
