Bit delayed posting this, but Ys: the Oath in Felgahana is now on Steam!

It is awesome and you should buy it.
For a bit more information, it's a very high-energy action rpg that focuses mostly on the action and exploration over loot and levelling. it's extremely fun to play without most of the BS you get in modern games... and I just can't get enough of it ;). I already own this game twice (Japanese boxed release + translation patch and PSP version) and will probably buy it on Steam for convenience the first time it goes on sale.
Anyways, watch the (admittedly cheesy) trailer and give it a shot.
Plus an official Ys Origin English release is coming out soon!

So we can assume you're being about as objective as a human can get about it.

Ys 1 - 3 are the best ones in my opinion. Though I'm more of a retro gaming lover. My personnel favorite being the 3rd game on the SNES.
Have to give this new one a go at some point.

Well, I DON'T own any original Japanese boxes and anime generally irritates me, and I still loved it. There are some typical animu tropes and useless characters, but it's not obnoxious and doesn't get in the way of awesome action, satisfying boss fights and slashy-slashy. It controls great with wsad+mouse, still looks fairly decent, and the music is a suitable mix of cheese and heroic epicness.
More of this sort of thing, please.

I don't watch anime either, and avoid the vast majority of JRPGs. I also very rarely import anything. However, in this case:
* Like Icemann, I too have a soft spot for Ys 3 on SNES
* I loved Ys: the Ark of Napishtim once it was released here for PS2
* I found out that Ys: the Oath in Felghana was a remake of Ys3 in the style of Ark of Napishtim, but better than both.
At that point, I was in "must buy this now" mode and thus imported it. To be fair, the boxed release contained EIGHT audio CDs with past versions of the Ys 3 music, so I'd still say it was worth it. At that point in time, it also didn't look like there was a hope in hell of it ever being released in English. Now it's released twice. Go figure.

This is far far more modern than I thought it would be. The only Ys games I ever played were on the Sega Master System and Turbo Graphics 16. And neither were jrpg or anime stylized.

Is the gameplay sticking with the style of the previous games (running into enemies does a melee attack, spell attack with with one of the mouse buttons etc)? Or are they going more standard action rpg style this time round?

You must not have played an Ys game in years. All of the recent Ys games (Ark of Napishtim, Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin and Ys Seven) have had a dedicated attack button. Gameplay is pretty similar to a sped-up Bastion; if you liked that, you'll like this. They have fairly extensive control customization too: you can play with a gamepad (recommended), keyboard only, or keyboard + mouse. For the latter, you can decide whether you want to keys to move or "move towards mouse cursor when I press (insert mouse button here)".
Of course, I recommend you start with Oath in Felghana.
