... no, the zombies did NOT spawn out of midair.
They're there, either patrolling or sleeping. You just woke 'em all up.
The neat thing about Thief is that, for the most part, there are no 'spawning' monsters.

I went down there and there were one or two wandering around. I slunk down the hall keeping to the shadows (this is the hall with the tall pillars, just beyond the hall you access via the square spiral staircase up from the flooded crypt). A second later, one appeared out of thin air about two metres in front of me, as well as a whole crowd of them behind it. A horde of about thirty instantly appeared where there were none before. I don't know where all thirty went though, because I just bolted and didn't go back to check. Maybe it was just a glitch, if it's never happened to anyone else.
I loaded up a savegame I made at the flooded crypt area and had a quick scoot around to see if it happened again but I can't remember where I was standing when it happened, so I didn't see any zombie horde spawn this time. It's too late (2:30am) for a zombiphobe to spend much time wandering around haunted subterranean graveyards, virtual or no.

Perservere my friend, perservere. For next you will get to play the mission that many rank as the best in Thief Gold, and that personally really woke me up to the fact that I was playing something different.

Zombies, the scourge of all thief games. Not only do I despise the spiders but I hate the zombies too.But I usually end up slaughtering them or just running away since zombies move at a slug's pace.I think the zombies in T: DS are pretty easy to deal with than the ones in the first two.
