I am not a fan of the levels that are packed with the undead simply because they're so scary. But now I look at it this way: they are slow and stupid, they make a nice squelch when the are blown apart and they can be aware of you without killing you a minute later. I often take advantage of their idiocy just to run past them (where is the nose-thumbing button eh?) and complete missions with more ease. And if it helps, turn down the sound. :)

There's no way I can play a level with zombies in it without going Hammerite on them and wiping out every stinking rotter I come across. They're too scary to just avoid. :erm:
What might help me would be if I could edit the texture files and give them a makeover... bright pink zombies with yellow polka-dots, eh? Like Mr Blobby's skinny counterparts. :D

Its funny because there are plenty of fairly terrifying creatures in thief... those horrible crayman, the rock dudes (i forget their names), burricks (to a lesser extent) yet it is always the undead that tend to freak people out. I think its the bloody groaning they make. Reminds me of my uncle elton.

What "rock dudes"?
In which part of Thief / which level do they appear?
I liked the missions with undead in them. It always made me treat the "fellow" humans much more nicely, since I had truly evil ones about.

sparkle_motion: if it helps, I was so freaked out by the freaky stuff in "Escape" that I immediately turned off my computer and didn't play Thief for a good week. Talk about trauma.
[edit]And of course it also matters that so far, there have been very few fan missions with creatures, and even fewer of these were as unsettling as their first appearance. Some brave soul needs to do to creatures what Sledge did to undead in The Inverted Manse[/edit]

Around the end of Deadly Shadows.

Yes I apologise, what are the 'rock dudes' officially called again???

Whatever they are called, they are probably the coolest opponents in the game (until you can easily destroy them, that is). I find it likely that like a lot of the Thief 3 main plot (which, for the record, was quite nice, if the technical side dragged down the game a bit), they were heavily inspired by Fritz Leiber's excellent Lankhmar stories.

When I originally played Thief years ago I really didn't like the undead levels. I actually never completed the whole game at that time. I quit somewhere during Return to the Cathedral and never went back. I think it was more from annoyance than fear since they never gave you enough ammo or ability to clear a level of undead. In most other levels you can just knock everything out and run around all you want to find stuff. I guess I just didn't have the patience for it back then. Recently I played through T3 and decided to go back to revisit the previous games. Having completed many scary games since that time including System Shock 2, Undying, FEAR, STALKER, and T3 (The Cradle), the undead in T1 don't seem nearly as bad although they are still creepy. But I managed to complete the game this time. I thought the creatures in the last couple of levels were a lot creeper than the undead to be honest but at least they were easily taken out. The undead, especially in Return to the Cathedral, are still the hardest to work around and still manage to make me jump when I open a door to find one right in front of me.
But as for Zombies I'll take them any day over the skeletons in red whatever they are called. Those skeleton guys move fast and are super creepy with that "join us" mantra they keep chanting. Although their laughing cracks me up for some reason. I just run around zombies. They're easy to lose especially in the Bonehoard. I just ran right past them in that level and did my thing. They can't keep up enough to know where I went and after a short time they go back to their business. They're still a pain in Return to the Cathedral though because there are a lot of smaller areas where you can't get away from them once they know you're there. I just avoid them as much as possible and save my weapons that kill them for areas where they are especially troublesome.

No idea... I just call them statues, or golems.
